There’s Life in the Old Log Yet: Merricks Project.

After arriving in Melbourne from Ireland, I started my own company in 1999 working by myself, and have since seen JConcepts Timber Floors grow to 10 employees, expanding into Geelong and the surf coast regions.

Our very first job was installing recycled Blackbutt on joists using old floor clamps when everything was still top nailed. From there, we began installing recycled products – with nearly every job for 7 to 8 years being exclusively sourced from recycled or re-milled timber products. Gaining a reputation throughout the industry, we were able to align with some of the best timber salvage merchants, working with interior designers and architects on some of Melbourne’s premier projects. Since the introduction of engineered timber, we have seen an increase in refinished products, but we still look forward to completing one-of-a-kind recycled timber projects.

Our latest project is no exception.

Partnering with Jaks Timber, who we sourced and milled the timber from, we were able to put together something very special. This floor consists of varied width Oregon boards up to a massive 375mm in width. The board lengths varied between 4 metres and 7 metres long.We sent them out to be wire brushed prior to installation to give the floor texture and remove the softer parts of the board. We then laid 300m2 of flooring in a 6 bedroom home, set on a 12 acre property in Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.

After the delivery had arrived we realised the flooring had been bolted in to the old building, and there were over 2000 timber plugs required to be cut and fitted, adding another unique layer to the venture. We then gave a final onsite wire brush to clean it up and remove any splinters before staining and coating. The final piece of the puzzle was to formulate a custom stain and finish with Fiddes Hard Wax oil.
